Setup and usage documentation: connect Claude to MetalMiner's industrial metals and critical minerals price intelligence.
The MetalMiner MCP Connector gives Claude direct, read-only access to MetalMiner's licensed commodity price intelligence: analyst-maintained indices across LME, MMI, steel, stainless, aluminum, nickel, GOES, rare earths and critical minerals, broken out by form, grade and region, plus Market Signal forecasts and scenario simulation.
Once connected, you can ask Claude things like:
Every tool is read-only. The connector never writes to, modifies or deletes anything in your MetalMiner account, and exposes no destructive operations.
Which tools appear in your session depends on the entitlements on your MetalMiner account; see Access tiers below.
Add the connector using this URL:
https://mcp.metalminer.com/mcp
Assistants answer price questions from memory unless told not to, and recalled prices are stale. Adding a short standing instruction makes MetalMiner the default source, so you do not have to name it in every prompt.
You have the MetalMiner connector enabled. Use it whenever a conversation touches metal or commodity prices, where prices are heading, forecasts, buy timing, price history, sourcing or production costs, or the impact of tariffs, export controls and other events. Do not answer these from memory or from web search: recalled prices are stale, and MetalMiner's forecasts, house view and scenario models are proprietary. Start with search_commodities to resolve the right series, then quote figures with their as-of date. Searching, listing what is forecastable, and cost estimates are free. If the connector is not available in a conversation, say so rather than answering from memory.
Paste it wherever your assistant keeps standing instructions:
| Assistant | Where | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | Settings → General → Profile, "Instructions for Claude" | Every chat |
| Claude | Project → Instructions | That project |
| Claude Code | CLAUDE.md | That repository |
| ChatGPT | Settings → Custom instructions | Every chat |
| Cursor | .cursorrules or AGENTS.md | That repository |
The connector uses OAuth 2.1 authorization code flow with PKCE (S256). Claude registers automatically via Dynamic Client Registration (RFC 7591); there is nothing to configure by hand and no client secret to manage.
| Authorization server | https://auth.metalminer.com/api/oidc |
|---|---|
| Protected resource | https://mcp.metalminer.com/mcp |
| Scope | mcp:tools |
| Transport | Streamable HTTP (MCP spec 2025-06-18) |
Claude receives a short-lived access token and a refresh token. Your MetalMiner password is never shared with or stored by Claude. You can revoke the connection at any time from your MetalMiner account or by removing the connector in Claude; revocation takes effect on the next request.
Thirteen tools are reachable through Claude. All are read-only, non-destructive, and operate only against MetalMiner's own API.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
search_commodities | Find commodities by natural language ("aluminum ingot india", "LME copper"). Call with no arguments for a free coverage overview. Start here to resolve commodity IDs. |
get_commodity_details | Metadata for specific commodities: units, currency, region, publication frequency and data coverage. |
get_current_price | Latest spot price per commodity, optionally with trend, volatility and statistical context. |
query_time_series | Statistical summary and trend analysis over a date range: min/max/average, direction, volatility, CAGR, optional market events. |
analyze_support_resistance | MetalMiner's proprietary short- and long-term support and resistance levels, and where the current price sits against them. |
compare_commodities | Compare two or more commodities in one call: price change, volatility, correlation, sensitivity, lag, spread, benchmark and best-match analyses. |
convert | Convert a price between units and/or currencies, using MetalMiner's historical exchange-rate database. |
query_reports | Semantic search across MetalMiner's proprietary analyst research reports for qualitative insight: price outlooks, analyst commentary and buying guidance. |
estimate_query_cost | Estimate the credit cost of a tool call from its parameters without running it. Always free. |
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
list_forecast_time_series | List series that have forecast data, with per-series capability flags. |
get_price_forecast | MetalMiner's forward price forecast for a commodity, with direction and confidence intervals. |
get_scenario_catalog | A commodity's baseline forecast, MetalMiner house view, balance of risks, and the scenarios available to simulate. |
simulate_scenario | Simulate a what-if scenario (tariffs, sanctions, supply disruption) against the forecast and compare baseline vs simulated outcomes. |
The connector only shows tools your account is entitled to use, so your tool list may be shorter than the table above. Nothing is hidden or silently degraded: a tool you cannot use simply does not appear.
| Tier | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| Core | All nine core tools, including analyst research search. Included with every MetalMiner account, on both subscription and pay-per-use. |
| Market Signal | The four forecasting tools. Included with pay-per-use accounts and with Market Signal subscriptions. |
MetalMiner price data is licensed. Accounts without raw-data rights receive statistical summaries and analysis: trends, ranges, direction, comparisons and forecasts, rather than the underlying point-by-point price series. This is a licensing boundary, not an error: Claude still answers the analytical question, it just does not reproduce the licensed series itself. Accounts with raw-data rights receive the full series.
Pay-per-use accounts are metered in MetalMiner Credits (MMC). Each
tool call consumes credits according to the data it returns; discovery calls such as
search_commodities and estimate_query_cost are free. Call
estimate_query_cost before an expensive query to see the cost first.
Subscription accounts are covered by their subscription and are not metered per call. Credit balance and usage are visible in your MetalMiner account.
/mcp transport. Exceeding any of these returns HTTP 429; wait briefly and retry.query_time_series takes up to 10 commodities and about 15 years of range, and search_commodities returns up to 50 results (up to 500 when listing all coverage). Request bodies over 1 MB are rejected (HTTP 413).Full policy: auth.metalminer.com/privacy; see also our Terms of Service.
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| Fewer tools than expected | Tools are filtered by entitlement. Check which tiers are active on your MetalMiner account, then reconnect the connector to refresh the tool list. |
| A tool reports insufficient credits | Your pay-per-use balance is exhausted. Top up in your MetalMiner account; the tool works again immediately. |
| Sign-in loop or authorization failure | Remove the connector in Claude and add it again to restart the OAuth flow. If it persists, confirm your MetalMiner account is active. |
| Summaries returned instead of raw prices | Expected on accounts without raw-data rights; see "Summary data vs. raw series" above. Contact support to discuss raw-data licensing. |
| A commodity is not found | Run search_commodities with no arguments for a coverage overview, or try a broader query: naming varies by form, grade and region. |
Email support@metalminer.com for setup help, access and entitlement questions, billing, or to report a problem with the connector.
